MISSISSAUGA: The Guelph Peak Performance Midget Girls fastball team made it to the semi finals of the recent USSSA Mississauga Southwest qualifying tourney before losing a tough 5-3 decision in an extra inning affair. Enniskillen who beat the Gators advanced to the finals and defeated Quebec to win the title.
The Peak girls opened the round robin portion tying Enniskillen 0-0 in a rain shortened affair. Amy Campagnolo allowed no runs in the 5 innings played fanning 8 on a 2 hitter. The Gators could only produce 4 hits of their own with Sam McMahon, Jess Turnbull, Aaliyah Davidson and Melissa Cook all collecting 1 apiece.
Next up the Peak Gators got their first win downing Mississauga North 4-0 with Turnbull striking out 10 in going the distance on her own 2 hit shutout. At the plate the locals jumped to a 2-0 lead on a Campagnolo walk, an Alex Dunbar double and a Cook base hit in the bottom of the 1st. In the 2nd the Gators got 2 more as Kayley Coish singled, Alissa Petrosoniak doubled and Tori Patteson reached on an error to load the bases. McMahon’s base hit scored one run while Rachelle Washkevich’s ground out made it 4-0. Cook and Coish each had 2 hits in the win.
Next up the Peak girls rallied with 4 counters in the bottom of the 6th to down a surprising Aurora team 4-3. Davidson picked up the win on the mound with 5 strong innings in relief of ailing Petrosoniak. In the big rally Emily Cava walked to lead things off and Cook followed one out later with a base hit to left. Campagnolo drilled a single to centre to score one run and then Alanna Hentges had the big blow with a triple to the fence in left field. One out later Coish’s sacrifice fly plated Hentges with the game winner.
In the semi finals the Peak girls went back and forth with Enniskillen again but stranded 9 runners and hit into 2 double plays killing other rallies. On the game Cava had a double and a single and drove in 2 runs while Cook and Coish each had 2 more hits apiece. Campagnolo took the loss going the distance with 7 strikeouts.
In a league game last Tuesday Turnbull threw another gem with a 3 hit shutout over Brampton as the Peak Gators shutout the visitors 8-0. Turnbull also had a big day at the plate with a triple and a single and 4 RBI’s while Cook and Dunbar chipped in with a pair of hits each.
This weekend the Peak Midget girls will be representing Ontario in a huge 24 team showcase tournament in Canton Michigan hosted by the Compuware Sports Association. Tournament begins on Thursday afternoon and runs through Sunday at the Canton Softball Complex.
